Computer 102 - Basics of the Web, E-mail, Backup, Security, and Spreadsheets

Description:

  • This course is an introduction to the Personal Computer (PC)
  • You will get hands-on practice using the Windows operating system, gain skill in using the mouse, and get experience with some useful computer programs.
  • Many of the lessons use the Microsoft Works suite of programs.
  • You will get examples of how PCs can be used in your life and activities.
  • The lessons are divided into two four-week courses. Computers 101 covers lessons one through four. Computers 102 covers lessons five through eight.
  • For each course, you will be given a manual to keep. The manuals contain a step-by-step review of the material covered in the classes. In addition, the Computers 101 manual contains several standalone sections that will be helpful references as you continue your computer experiences.

Lesson Five: Introduction to E-mail and the World Wide Web

  • Learn to connect to the Internet and open a browser
  • Become familiar with the parts of a browser
  • Learn how to navigate to a specific Web page
  • Learn how to browse Web sites using links and navigation arrows
  • Search the Internet
  • Learn the basics of e-mail software
  • Read, compose, send, and reply to e-mail

Lesson Six: Spreadsheets

  • Become familiar with some of the basic features of a spreadsheet
  • Use the mouse to select cells and ranges in a spreadsheet
  • Understand formulas and recalculation
  • Enter data and formulas in a spreadsheet
  • Use the toolbar to format numbers for currency and calculate totals
  • Change the data within a cell
  • Insert new rows and insert data
  • Format fonts and appearance of text
  • Save a spreadsheet that has been edited
  • Set up a spreadsheet for printing

Lesson Seven: More Spreadsheet Uses; Microsoft Works Templates

  • Create various types of charts from spreadsheet data
  • Use Microsoft Works spreadsheet tools to insert a series
  • Name a spreadsheet range
  • Use Easy Calc to help create formulas
  • Use spreadsheets as lists
  • Learn to add and delete listings
  • Learn how to use pre-programmed templates in Microsoft Works

Lesson Eight: Backup, Security; Creative Uses of Microsoft Office Word

  • Learn how to create and implement a backup plan
  • Learn about the various threats to your computer security and how to protect yourself from them
  • Create a flyer using clip art from the Internet
  • Size and format clip art
  • Revise and format text for maximum impact
  • Print preview, save, and print your project
